The Digital Stage for
Malaysian Buskers

An all-in-one platform for buskers to establish their digital presence, publish live gig schedules, and transition street performance into a sustainable, formalised business.

Context

Busking in Malaysia is thriving — and completely invisible.

From Bukit Bintang to Gurney Drive, Jonker Street to Kuching Waterfront, street performance is a nightly reality. But it exists almost entirely outside the digital and financial system.

Pain Point 01

No Centralised Discovery Hub

There is no dedicated, official platform for buskers to promote themselves, cultivate a following, or broadcast verified performance dates and locations to the public.

  • Discovery is accidental. Fans only find a busker if they physically walk past them — there is no way to search, browse or plan around a performance.
  • Presence is fragmented. A TikTok here, an Instagram story there, a WhatsApp status update — with no verified source of truth anywhere.
  • "Who's playing tonight?" has no answer. No live map, no schedule, no confirmation that a performance is legitimate or licensed.
  • Venues cannot hire what they cannot find. Event bookers, cafés and corporate clients have no directory, no vetting, and no rate cards to work from.
  • Following is fragile. No fan list, no owned channel, no way to bring the same crowd back next week.
Income is capped by whoever happens to walk by — and pricing power stays at zero. Talent is not the bottleneck. Visibility is.

For Buskers

Every night starts from zero. No audience asset is ever accumulated.

For Audiences

Live culture is happening nearby, and there is no way to find it.

Pain Point 02

Ad-Hoc Financial Management

Earnings are typically treated as informal cash-in-hand rather than recognised revenue. Without accessible tools to track OPEX, cash flow and net profit, performers cannot formalise their operations into viable, bankable businesses.

  • Cash-in-hand, unrecorded. Tips go into a guitar case, then into a pocket. Nothing is logged, nothing accumulates.
  • One wallet for two things. Personal and performance money are indistinguishable — so the "business" has no visible earnings at all.
  • OPEX is invisible. Transport, food, PA rental, strings, cables, permits, repairs — never counted against revenue, so "profit" is a guess.
  • No proof of income. No statements, no receipts, no history — which means no microcredit, no financing, no venue contracts.
  • Compliance blind spots. No tax filings, no SOCSO or EPF self-contribution, no insurance, no safety net for injury or illness.
Performing never converts into a business. It stays a hobby with a hat — no matter how many years, or how many ringgit, pass through it.

The core issue

It is not that buskers earn too little. It is that their earnings are structurally invisible — to banks, to regulators, to venues, and often to themselves.

The Compounding Cost

What informality actually costs a performer

Each gap reinforces the next. Without records there is no proof; without proof there is no access; without access there is no growth.

What a busker needs What they have today Result
Proof of income No records, no statements Rejected for microcredit, grants and financing
To invoice a corporate client No receipts, no registered entity Loses the highest-value gigs to agencies
To negotiate a fair rate No data on audience or earnings Underpaid; permanently a price-taker
To survive a slow month No cash-flow visibility Feast-and-famine cycle, no planning
Safety net & protection Not registered with SOCSO/EPF Zero cover for injury, illness or retirement
To build a fanbase No owned audience channel Starts from zero every single night
The Opportunity

Three shifts make this the right moment

The infrastructure that was missing five years ago now exists — and the policy environment is actively pushing in the same direction.

Shift 01

Creative economy tailwinds

National and state programmes actively promote busking as cultural tourism — licensing drives, creative economy agencies, and Visit Malaysia campaigns all need a digital layer to operate on.

Shift 02

Cashless is now normal

DuitNow QR ubiquity means a tip jar can be a QR code. Every tip becomes a logged, timestamped, verifiable data point — with zero hardware.

Shift 03

Gig economy needs legitimacy

Banks, regulators and platforms are all looking for ways to bring informal earners into the formal economy. Buskers are a visible, high-goodwill starting point.

02

03

Get Paid

A DuitNow QR tip jar. Cashless tips land instantly and every ringgit is logged automatically.

Auto-generated P&L, OPEX tracking, invoices, income statements and registration guidance. Busker becomes business.

Pillar 01 — Showcase

The Digital Stage

A professional, verified profile that works as a portfolio, a press kit and a booking funnel — all at once.

  • Verified profile. Bio, genre, instruments, languages, media reel and a public rate card.
  • "Verified Busker" badge. Tied to local council licensing — giving audiences confidence and giving the platform trust.
  • Auto-generated EPK. A one-tap electronic press kit that venues, weddings and corporate clients can download.
  • Booking inbox. Enquiries, quotes and confirmations in one thread — no more lost DMs.
  • Owned following. A follower list that belongs to the busker, not an algorithm.

Live Gig Map & Verified Schedules

The answer to "who's playing tonight?" — a verified, real-time broadcast of where live street performance is happening.

  • Publish in 30 seconds. Drop a location pin, set the time, add a setlist note. Done — before the first song.
  • "Busking Now" live map. Fans, tourists and locals open the app and see who is playing within walking distance.
  • Follow & get notified. Push alerts when a favourite busker goes live nearby — turning accidental audiences into returning ones.
  • Recurring slots. Weekly residency at a night market or mall? Set it once, publish it automatically.
  • Verified schedules. Reduces no-shows and scams for venues, and confirms legitimacy for councils.

Cashless Tips & Automatic Tracking

The moment money becomes data. Every tip is logged, categorised and turned into a financial record — without the busker doing any bookkeeping.

  • DuitNow QR tip jar. A printable QR, a phone-screen QR, zero hardware and zero setup cost.
  • Auto-logged earnings. Every session recorded by date, location and time block — no manual entry.
  • Tag OPEX on the go. Transport, food, PA rental, strings, permits — logged in two taps while packing up.
  • Live P&L dashboard. Gross earnings → operating expenses → net profit, per gig and per month.
  • Exportable statements. Weekly and monthly summaries as PDF or CSV — the beginning of a financial identity.

Pillar 04 — Formalise

From Busker to Bankable Business

The bridge from informal cash to a recognised, financeable enterprise — built on the data the busker is already generating.

📄 Income statements

Auto-generated, timestamped earnings records that can be presented as proof of income to banks, landlords and grant bodies.

🧾 Invoicing

Generate professional invoices for corporate gigs, weddings and events — with payment tracking and reminders.

🏛️ Registration guidance

A guided SSM sole-proprietor flow in five steps, with council licensing renewal reminders built in.

📊 Tax-ready summaries

LHDN-friendly annual summaries, plus nudges for SOCSO and EPF self-contribution so no year is lost.

💳 Financing marketplace

Curated access to microcredit, creative-economy grants and equipment financing — matched to verified earnings.

🎓 Business health score

Micro-lessons on pricing, saving and cash flow, with a score that improves as the business matures.

This is the difference between a platform that helps buskers earn and a platform that helps buskers become businesses. The second one is defensible, and the second one is what banks and governments will pay for.

🤝 Sponsors & Brands

Anonymised footfall and audience insights, plus sponsored "busking trails" and branded stages — a high-goodwill, hyper-local activation channel that currently has no organised entry point.

Win one city completely, then replicate

Density beats coverage. A busker platform is only useful where there are enough buskers and enough audience in the same place at the same time.

PHASE 01 · 0–6 MONTHS

Kuala Lumpur pilot

200 hand-recruited buskers in Bukit Bintang, KLCC and Bangsar. Partnerships with council licensing and creative-economy agencies. Community ambassadors on the ground. Onboarding happens in person, in the field, not through ads.

PHASE 02 · 6–14 MONTHS

Penang, JB & state expansion

Replicate the playbook in George Town, Johor Bahru and Melaka. Onboard venues and event planners to activate the booking marketplace. Launch Pro tier and the first sponsorship pilots.

PHASE 03 · 14–24 MONTHS

Risks

What could go wrong — and our answer

Named honestly, because these are the questions every partner will ask.

Risk Why it matters Mitigation
Adoption & digital literacy Many buskers are not app-first users Multilingual UI, WhatsApp-based onboarding, field ambassadors, in-person training
Cash habit persists Tips stay in the guitar case Zero transaction fees for 12 months, instant payout, visible earnings dashboard
Licensing complexity Rules differ by council and state Council partnerships, licence verification integrations, jurisdiction-aware guidance
Trust & safety Unverified listings damage credibility Verified badges, code of conduct, reporting tools, venue ratings
Two-sided cold start No buskers means no audience and vice versa Seed supply first in a single dense precinct; audience follows density, not breadth
Pentas

Every busker deserves
a stage that pays.

Talent is not the bottleneck. Visibility is. Records are. Legitimacy is. Pentas fixes all three — turning Malaysia's street performers into discoverable, bankable, sustainable businesses.

We're seeking

Pilot funding, council and creative-economy partnerships, and a payments partner.

First milestone

200 verified buskers in Kuala Lumpur, tracking real earnings, within 6 months.

The ask

A conversation. We'll bring the pilot data — you bring the stage.
